Dr Avindra Nath
National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke National Institutes of Health Bethesda, Maryland, USA

Dr Nath is a clinician scientist whose research focuses on the role of retroviruses and retroviral elements in neurological diseases. His laboratory studies how retroviruses maintain latency in the brain and how viral proteins cause neuronal injury. They showed the activation of an endogenous retrovirus in the brain of patients with ALS and how it leads to motor neuron disease. They are now developing several therapeutic strategies to block the activation of this virus.

Dr Nath received the Pioneer award from the International Society of Neurovirology and is also the past President of this society. He also received the Wyban award from the Society of Neuroimmune Pharmacology.
