Professor Julie Atkin
Professor of Neurobiology, Macquarie Centre for MND Research, Australia
Talk title: "Dysfunction to proteostasis mechanisms in ALS/FTD"
Professor Julie Atkin is co-Director of the Macquarie Centre for MND Research, Sydney, Australia, a multidisciplinary program involving genetics, cell biology, animal models, and clinical research to examine ALS/FTD. She obtained her Ph.D. in Biochemistry/Molecular Biology from Sheffield University, UK, and then worked in the biotechnology industry and at the Florey Neuroscience Institute, Melbourne. From 2009-2014 she was based at La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science, Melbourne and currently holds an Adjunct Professor position.
Professor Atkin’s team uses cell biology, protein biochemistry and in vivo models to decipher the basic cellular signalling pathways involved in neurodegeneration in ALS/MND, to identify novel therapeutic targets and biomarkers.
